Type of position: post-doctoral fellowship, three years funded by Telethon
Subject: area Neuroscience, Cell Biology.
Description: Myelination is a complex series of events that include axon recognition and contact, promotion of myelination, and membrane trafficking of lipids and proteins. How membrane trafficking is achieved and regulated during myelination remains to be assessed. Poly-phosphoinositide phospholipids are potent signaling molecules regulating a variety of cellular functions including membrane trafficking. Recently, a number of genes encoding proteins binding to phospholipids or regulating their concentration at sub-cellular membranes have been identified as mutated in Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathies, thus providing the opportunity to study basic mechanisms of the cell biology of myelination in Schwann cells.
In this project the candidate will investigate the role of PtdIns3P and PtdIns(3,5)P2 phospholipids in the regulation of membrane trafficking and cytoskeletal remodeling during Schwann cell myelination. These lipids are located at endosomes and plasma membrane. These studies will be performed taking advantage of several animal models available in the lab and of primary co-cultures of neurons and Schwann cells that reproduce in vitro peripheral nervous system myelination.
